Why Is It So Hard to Find a Driving Test in the UK?

Are you struggling to find a driving test? You’re not alone. The UK is facing a serious shortage of available driving test slots. This means many learners are left waiting months to take their test. But why is this happening? And more importantly, is there anything you can do about it?

The Reality of Driving Test Availability

In many areas, driving test slots are completely booked up. For example, here’s what the current (as of 21 Feb 2025) waiting times look like in some major test centers:

  • Driving tests in Aberdeen – Next available slots in July
  • Driving tests in Glasgow – No tests available for this year (new slots for August-September sell out instantly)
  • Driving tests in Exeter – Similarly to Glasgow, new slots appear occasionally but are gone fast
  • Driving tests in Bristol – No tests available for this year

With these long waits, it’s no surprise that learners are getting frustrated.

Why Are Driving Tests So Hard to Find?

The high demand for driving tests is due to several reasons:

  • Increased demand – More people are learning to drive than ever before.
  • Test slot shortages – The DVSA only releases slots every few weeks, and they sell out fast.
  • Fewer cancellations – People are holding on to their test slots because they know how hard they are to find.

All of this makes finding a driving test difficult—but not impossible.

What If You Can’t Find a Test?

If you’re struggling to find a test, you have a few options:

  1. Try different test centers – For example, if there are no driving tests in Bristol, consider traveling to a nearby city. If you decide to travel, we strongly recommend taking a few lessons in that area—ideally a 5-day intensive course—to familiarize yourself with the local roads and test routes.
  2. Book in advance – If you’re not in a hurry, book the earliest available test and try to find a sooner one later.
  3. Search for cancellations – If you have the time, you can check for cancellations on the DVSA website. You could do this yourself: log into the DVSA website and check it over 100 times a day for a few days or weeks until you find a test slot that someone else has cancelled. This process, understandably, is very time-consuming and not feasible for many.
  4. Use a professional fast-track driving test service
