DVSA Driving Test Cancellation Changes: What You Need to Know

From April 8, 2025, the DVSA is increasing the notice period for cancelling or rescheduling a car driving test. Instead of the current three full working days, learners will need to give at least ten full working days to avoid losing their test fee.

Keep in mind that the DVSA website often experiences high traffic, which can cause access issues. In practice, this means that if you need to cancel your test, it’s best to do so at least eleven days before your scheduled date to avoid any technical problems.

Why Is This Happening?

Many learners cancel their tests at the last minute, making it hard for others to book newly available slots. As a result, some test appointments are not used, unnecessarily increasing wait times for everyone.

During 2024, about 60,000 appointments were wasted because people did not turn up for their test. This is why DVSA is making changes.

You can still apply for a refund in special cases, such as illness, bereavement, a school exam, or if your provisional driving licence is stolen. But for most, failing to reschedule in time will mean losing the £62 test fee.

What Does This Mean for Our Learners?

At Pass in Days, we specialize in securing fast-track driving tests as part of our intensive driving courses package. Our aim is to schedule your practical driving test within one to three weeks after you complete your lessons, provided you are safe and ready to take the test. In busy cities like Bristol or peak times of the year, this may take longer, but we still secure tests much faster than the standard waiting times, which can stretch to several months or even a year. If you happen to fail your test, we can book another fast-track test for you for an additional fee, or you can book a test yourself.

Learners now have two main options when booking their tests through us:

  • Request to book a fast-track test before starting lessons. This means your test will be scheduled soon after the course (provided you have passed your theory). We find test dates 90% faster than the standard waiting time, typically within 1-2 weeks after the course; in high-demand areas or during busy periods, it may occasionally take a little longer. But if you are not ready, you will not be able to reschedule and will lose the test fee. Your instructor will not allow you to take the test in their car unless you are fully prepared.
  • Wait until you start your course to request a test. This gives you time to assess your progress and confidence before setting a test date. The downside is that you may have to wait longer for a test slot. However, in the meantime, you will be able to take more lessons with your instructor on a pay-as-you-go basis (subject to the instructor’s availability) for more skill and confidence—if you need so!

How Pass in Days Books Your Driving Test

To maximise your chances of securing a test quickly and avoiding unnecessary risks, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Pass your theory test at least one month before your course begins. This allows us to start searching for a test as soon as possible.
  2. Submit the Driving Test Request (DTR) form on time. We can’t begin searching for your test without this.
  3. Be realistic about your readiness. If your instructor deems you unsafe to drive, you will not be able to take the test, and if you cannot reschedule, you will lose the fee.
  4. Understand that waiting times can vary. While we typically secure a test within one to two or three weeks after your course, there are occasional delays, especially in high-demand areas.
  5. Mock test on your last day. On the final day of your course, your instructor will conduct a mock test to assess if you are truly test-ready. If you need extra lessons, you can book them (subject to availability) before taking your actual driving test.
