Spring Driving Tips

Spring brings warmer weather and longer days, making it a great time to practice driving. However, it also comes with challenges like rain, wind, and busier roads. Whether you are a learner or a new driver, being prepared will help you stay safe and confident on the road.

Check Your Car After Winter

Winter can cause damage to the car, so check your vehicle before you drive. Have you looked at your tyres lately? Make sure they have enough tread to keep you safe on spring roads. Look over your windscreen wipers and replace them if they leave streaks. Clean your windows properly to reduce glare from the sun. Also, top up essential fluids like oil, coolant, and screen wash.

Driving in Spring Rain

Spring showers can make roads slippery. Rainwater mixed with oil on the road can reduce grip, making it harder to stop. Keep a safe distance from the car ahead and slow down if roads are wet. Make sure your wipers work well and use your headlights when visibility drops. What to do if your car starts to skid? It’s simple: keep calm, ease off the accelerator and avoid sudden braking.

Dealing with Strong Winds

Windy conditions can make driving tricky, especially on open roads or near large vehicles. Be ready for sudden gusts and hold the steering wheel firmly. Keep an eye out for fallen branches or debris on the road. If driving near high-sided vehicles, give extra space as they might sway in the wind.

Beware of Sun Glare

Spring sun can be bright, can’t it? Especially during sunrise and sunset. Clean the inside of your windscreen to reduce glare. Keep sunglasses in your car and use your sun visor when needed. Adjust your mirrors properly so you don’t get blinded by reflections. Stay alert, as other drivers may struggle with visibility too.

Watch for Cyclists and Pedestrians

Warmer weather brings more people outside. Cyclists and pedestrians will be more common, especially in residential areas and near parks. Drive carefully in these areas and slow down when passing cyclists. Be patient at crossings and always be ready for unexpected movements from children or animals.

Time for a Spring Clean

Dirt, salt, and grime from winter can build up on your car. Give it a proper wash to prevent rust and keep it looking good. Clean the inside too, as dust and dirt can make windows harder to see through.
