What’s Easier: Bristol Avonmouth or Kingswood?

Driving courses companies in Bristol often hear the question: which DVSA driving centre is easier to pass the driving test, Avonmouth or Kingswood? When deciding between Avonmouth or Kingswood for your driving test in Bristol, it’s natural to wonder which location might offer an easier path to success. Each of the driving centres in Bristol has its unique characteristics, and recent DVSA data sheds light on the pass rates.

Theory Test Preparation

Obviously, to book your practical driving test in Bristol, you need to pass the car theory test first. The current UK average theory test pass rate is 45%. In Bristol, it’s about 48.5%, according to the DVSA data. This indicates that learners in Bristol are slightly better prepared for the theory test compared to the average.

Keep in mind that some driving courses companies in Bristol, such as Pass in Days, offer free access to theory study materials. When you book your driving course in Bristol with Pass in Days, you receive an access to Theory Test Pro, a tool that includes multiple choice questions, hazard perception videos and more.

Practical Test Waiting Times in Bristol

Bristol used to have four driving test centres, but after the closures of Southmead and Brislington, the city now has only two, leading to longer waiting times for driving tests. This is one of the reasons waiting times for practical driving tests in Bristol Avonmouth and Kingswood have been a significant challenge in recent years, with peaks reaching even 6 months!

However, some driving lessons companies in Bristol, such as Pass in Days, offer fast-track driving tests. By booking your driving course in Bristol with Pass in Days, you will have a driving test secured in about one to three weeks after course completion, whether at Avonmouth or Kingswood, subject to being safe and ready.

Avonmouth and Kingswood Pass Rates

Learning to drive can be challenging, no matter where you are in the UK. However, Bristol appears to offer a high chance of success. The practical driving test pass rate in Bristol is above the national average. According tot he DVSA data, pass rates stand at 54,4% for Kingswood and 56% for Avonmouth. In both cases, over half of the passes were on the first attempt! This suggests that learners in Bristol are generally well-prepared for their tests.

However, pass rates can be misleading as they don’t tell the full story. The most important factor is finding a good driving instructor in Bristol who can thoroughly prepare the learner for the specific test centre, whether it’s Kingswood or Avonmouth. A fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor in Bristol will tailor the lessons to ensure the learner is ready for the unique challenges of their chosen test location.

Top Reasons For Failing Driving Tests

According to the DVSA, the main reasons for driving test failures in the UK include:

  • not making effective observations at junctions,
  • not using mirrors correctly when changing direction,
  • not moving off safely,
  • incorrect positioning when turning right at junctions,
  • not having proper control of the steering,
  • not responding appropriately to traffic lights,
  • not responding correctly to traffic signs,
  • poor positioning on the road during normal driving,
  • not responding correctly to road markings,
  • and not keeping control of the vehicle during reverse parking.

Avonmouth and Kingswood Characteristics

These issues are generally the same in Kingswood or Avonmouth (and any other driving test centre!), although each location has its own challenges.

Avonmouth is a port and outer suburb of Bristol. Common problems that aspiring drivers face in Avonmouth include confusing roundabouts and fading lane markers due to heavy lorry traffic. Additionally, some learners fail in Avonmouth due to speeding, as the area has many big, sometimes empty roads. During peak hours, in turn, some roads might be congested due to workers commuting. Otherwise, Avonmouth is described as having a pleasant route.

Kingswood is situated 3 miles east-northeast of Bristol. Some new drivers struggle with roundabouts, especially the famous throughabout, while others find the narrow residential roads or steep hills difficult to navigate. However, pass rates in Kingswood are almost as high as in Avonmouth, and an experienced instructor will guide you through all these challenges, ensuring you’re well-prepared for your driving test.
